Exploring Enamels

Taught by Linda Darty

May 12-13, 2007 from 9am - 4pm at East Carolina University.

Cost: $150 for members (you must be a member to participate).  Add $20 to your fee to join NCSG.

A variety of innovative enameling processes will be introduced and students can choose to work with those that they like best. A basic introduction to enameling will be presented which includes differences in lead and lead free enamels, preparation of enamel, working with opaque and transparent colors, dry sifting and wet inlaying techniques. We will experiment with liquid form enamels that allow for a lot of experimentation to get a variety of surface effects, stenciling and sgraffito techniques, painting enamel techniques, decal papers, torch and kiln firing. Simple approaches to cloissone will also be introduced for those that wish to focus on wet inlaying. Metal fabrication, soldering with enameling and finishing techniques will be discussed as they relate to enameling.

Emphasis should be on learning techniques that individuals can later use in their own work, making samples during the 2 days and using a variety of approaches.

The course is suitable for beginner or more advanced enamellists. Some metalworking experience would be helpful.
