There are myriad ways to add interest to your metal surfaces. This class will explore many of those techniques and allow students to add their own creativity to enhance their jewelry and metal work. The class will start with the techniques of chasing, matting and stamping. These decorative surface techniques are applied using small hand tools, striking them with hammers onto annealed metal, making impressions to express each individual’s unique style. Chasing can be used as an incising technique, which can then be filled with silver solder, giving the illusion of intricate inlay. Chasing, matting and stamping impressions may also be used in the rolling mill with another piece of sheet metal to create a raised reverse roll design. Other texturing techniques such as roll printing, texture filing, and use of specialized hammers to alter and enrich surfaces will be covered. Each topic will be taught by lecture, demonstrations, and practice by students. Students will make samples using these techniques. Please note: This is an Intermediate Level workshop. Basic metalsmithing skills are prerequisite.
